Yesterday, Thursday 20/10/11 at 4.45am, Dave Alley completed an anti-clockwise bike ride around Australia to set a new world record, and raise around $25,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Some interesting facts:
- total time 37days 20hours 45mins
- total distance 14,251 km
- daily speeds kph : min 20.1 max 29.0, weighted average 25.03
- daily distances km : min 191, max 506, average 375
- although average speed appears to decrease with time, it doesn't follow that effort also decreased. Initially, tail winds and climate contributed to higher speed. Across the top of Australia, heat was an issue, the west coast had headwinds, and the Nullabor Plain had both heat and headwinds. Further, average speed can also be influenced by night or day riding. The east coast had more variable terrain and heavier traffic.
